PUNK ROCK MAGAZINE COVER EXPLORATION

While researching magazine covers I have discovered that most magazines follow the same layout. This is helpful for Charlie and me as we can follow this layout in our magazine cover.

While thinking about ideas for our magazine I decided to look up different punk rock magazine covers, contents page and double spread page to try and get different ideas on how to set out our work.
The one magazine I came across which i really liked was NME. The magazine covers normally have one single picture of an artist with a plain background. The magazine only uses around three colours which compliment the picture and background. This is a good idea for us to use in our magazine.

STYLE ICON FOR PUNK ROCK: TAYLOR MOMSEN

Taylor Momsen who originally played "Jenny" on the hit show "Gossip Girl" fronts the band The Pretty Reckless. She writes all the songs, sings and plays the guitar on the album.
Momsen has stated that "music is where I can be me", saying that "Acting is easy. I've been doing it for so long and I totally love it. But you're playing a character instead of yourself. Music is more personal because you're writing it and you're involved in every step of it."
Taylor Momsen is a good icon for punk rock and gives us a good idea of the kind of bands we need to include in our magazine.

CREATING OUR MARKETING PLAN

I studied the history of music magazines using sites such as: MediaEdu http://media.edusites.co.uk/index.php/article/introduction-to-contemporary-music-press/

It reinforced my understanding of the music press as a very active market but one which is both crowded and having to contend with huge competition from other platforms such as the internet. Bands nowadays use the internet to promote themselves in the digital age, the record industry has changed beyond recognition in the last decade and so the music press has to accommodate the changes in the way in which people listen to music.

RESEARCH OF PUNK ROCK

Punk rock is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as protopunk music, punk rock bands eschewed perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. Punk bands created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produced recordings and distributed them through informal channels.

By late 1976, bands such as the Ramones, in New York City, and the Sex Pistols and The Clash, in London, were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. The following year saw punk rock spreading around the world, and it became a major cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom. For the most part, punk took root in local scenes that tended to reject association with the mainstream.

TARGET AUDIENCE

For our punk rock music magazine our target audience would most likely be in the following catagories:
  1. Age: Young Adults
  2. Music: Hard Edged and Fast (punk rock)
  3. Bands from this genre: Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash
  4. Style: individuality, morbid and rebellious
Now that we have profiled our target audience we intend to include the following code and conventions in our magazine:

masthead
large main image
main cover line
cover line
selling line

model credit

dateline and price

Ideas for the Magazine Title:

We came up with these ideas by using a thesaurus an researching words such as punk, rock and music which came out with a list of suggestions.

STARTING ON OUT COURSEWORK

Charlie Lewin and I have started to think of ideas for our coursework. As I do photography A level and we are both interested in photography and know how to use Photoshop we have decided to do a magazine print. As we have to do a music magazine we are going to use our friends band "First Hurdle" to feature in our magazine. We will be able to get first hand interviews with the band and take pictures of them in concert.
Our first steps in making our magazine will be
  • Doing an interview with First Hurdle
  • Taking pictures and using photoshop to edit them
  • Looking through music magazines and getting ideas on how to set out our magazine
  • Figuring out what else to put in our magazine

THE ART OF THE TITLE

Captain America: The First Avenger (Joe Johnston 2011)

After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

The opening sequence uses pictures relating to America and the War.

Up in The Air (Jason Reitman 2009)

With a job that has him traveling around the country firing people, Ryan Bingham leads an empty life out of a suitcase, until his company does the unexpected: ground him.

Casino Royale (Martin Campbell 2006)

In his first mission, James Bond must stop Le Chiffre, a banker to the world's terrorist organisations, from winning a high-stakes poker tournament at Casino Royale in Montenegro.

The opening sequence stays true to the theme of the movie which is James Bond sequel. The opening sequence also stays true to the title Casino Royale as it uses props and scenery that relate to the setting of a Casino. These include cards, casino chips, gambling and the fact it is filmed in a casino itself.
The beginning shows a shot being fired by James Bond and a stream of red blood running down the screen indicating death in the movie.

My Media World

Answer the Question: What Media do I use? How does it affect me and the world I live in?

  • I have an iPhone 3gs which I mostly use for texting, calling, using the internet and listening to music. If I upgraded I think that I would get the new Blackberry Bold as all of my friends have Blackberry and the use blackberry messenger (bbm) to chat to their friends for free so if I were to get a blackberry I would also be able to use bbm for free.
  • To keep in touch with my friends I use facebook and twitter. I talk to my friends through facebook by either writing on their walls or sending them a message. Facebook is also a great way to see what everyone is up to and it lets you share your pictures with your friends. I use twitter to get updated on the news and to also find out what is happening with celebrities. I am not concerned about the privacy issues as I know that on facebook only my friends can see my profile.

  • Music is very important in my life and I tend to listen to music on either my iPhone or my laptop. I also sometimes watch music channels on the TV. I pay for music through iTunes as it guarantees you a good quality song and is also easy.
  • If I want to see a film, I tend to watch the trailers online on youtube, or if I see a trailer on the TV that interests me, I will look up the film on the internet. I book cinema tickets online as it is quick and easy and it guarantees you a seat. You also don'y have to wait in the queue at the cinema to buy the tickets.
  • I have an Apple Macbook which I use mostly for the internet and to do my work. I use the internet for 2 -3 hours a day for either my work, or for the social networks. I also use the internet for shopping. My family uses the internet for mostly work and also for shopping online as it is quick and easy. I experience various problems with the internet such as finding it difficult to connect to the wireless sometimes and also having a slow connection.
  • I would go online to read news if I have heard people talking about something that happened. I rarely buy newspapers but I read them if my dad has bought them.
  • On TV I tend to watch programs such as Gossip Girl, 90210 or Friends. I also like to watch sporting events and MasterChef. If I want to watch something that I have missed I either watch it on the TV if it is being repeated or watch it on the internet.

After Effects Video

Our Media department recently bought the Adobe After Affects software for the computers. We had a lesson on how to use the After Affects and on how to make an ident for a movie. We worked through the After Affects and made an ident for our thriller movie. It was really interesting learning how to use the Adobe Software and was exciting making the ident.
